#1 | Apple invites first users to apply for its credit card

Apple has notified some customers that they can now apply for its Apple Card. The announcement comes as the phone maker ramps up preparations for the official launch of the new credit card in August. Apple’s move into banking has been done in partnership with Goldman Sachs while Mastercard is set to provide the payment network. #2 | New York City gets its first autonomous shuttle service

Optimus Ride, the self-driving car company and MIT spinoff, has launched the first autonomous shuttle service in New York City. The company operates a group of electric vehicles that will shuttle visitors around the private streets of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a historic hub turned tech incubator. The ride will be short, however, and will go along a single, 1.1 miles-long route. Safety drivers will be placed in each vehicle while the company’s engineers will monitor the performance of their autonomous system. And although the project is small in scope, Ryan Chin, CEO of Optimus Ride, is optimistic that this is just a sign of much bigger things to come. #3 | FedEx to end its ground-shipping contract with Amazon   

FedEx will not renew the ground delivery shipping contract with Amazon that ends this month, following a similar decision in June that covered air shipments. This means that two companies will no longer cooperate on last-mile delivery services as the e-commerce giant expands its shipping capabilities. Amazon already added more cargo planes to its fleet and is allocating more of its business to UPS and USPS. FedEx previously confirmed that Amazon makes up less than 1.3 percent of the shipper’s total revenue and that the company is looking to capitalize on the growing demand from thousands of other retailers. #4 | Amazon deploys delivery robots in California

Amazon has launched the last-mile robot delivery service in the Irvine area, its Southern California testbed. The machine called Scout will transport parcels from distribution points to Amazon Prime customers making vans and cars unnecessary at this stage of the delivery chain. Mobile robots will be accompanied by humans that will make sure that everything goes smoothly. The online retailer is particularly keen on gauging public reaction to these devices as it’s still unclear how will residents respond to the new six-wheeler on their sidewalk space. #5 | Facebook to rename WhatsApp and Instagram

Facebook is launching major rebranding efforts to bring its various apps under the single banner. WhatsApp and Instagram are to get new names and will be known as “WhatsApp from Facebook” and “Instagram from Facebook”. The days in which these two apps were largely left on its own are apparently over as Mark Zuckerberg and his team wants to make it clear that all these services are linked. Facebook already uses the same approach with some of its other products such as “Workplace from Facebook” and its VR platform Oculus has similar branding.
